Choosing the tourist train from Ambert in Auvergne means letting yourself be tempted by slow tourism

Discovery train

The railcar is an emblematic and unique means of transport, developed until the 60s by Renault and Michelin in collaboration with the SNCF. It offers a unique travel experience, very different from modern means of transport.

Initially designed to serve regional or rural lines, the railcar is distinguished by its specific design, combining functionality and old-world charm. It is a light rail vehicle, whose speed rarely exceeds 30 km/hour. Carefully renovated and operated by volunteers who are passionate about rail, these historic trains are now exclusively dedicated to tourist adventures.

The Livradois-Forez Regional Natural Park is an ideal destination for discovering the charm of railcar travel. The first section is operated by the AGRIVAP association. Its 42 kilometer route linking Ambert to Chaise Dieu represents one of the longest tourist lines in France managed by an association. It crosses viaducts, tunnels, and hilly landscapes, offering travelers an immersive experience in the heart of the Livradois-Forez landscapes.
The 2nd section is managed by the CFHF association. The route begins in Estivareilles in the Loire and ends at Chaise Dieu.

Experience aboard a tourist train in Auvergne

The panoramic tourist train departing from Ambert meanders peacefully along the La Dore river. On the Estivareilles-La Chaise Dieu section, the Pontempeyrat viaduct, for example, with its 36 meters height overlooking the Ance, marks the natural border between the departments of Puy-de-Dôme, Haute-Loire and the Loire, and offers a breathtaking view of the surrounding area.

This rail journey is an invitation to discovery, to wonder at landscapes that are often otherwise inaccessible. The bridges and viaducts, true works of art of civil engineering, blend into a green and sometimes rugged setting, testifying to the adaptation of the railway to the complex topography of the region.

For those who boarded in Ambert or Arlanc, the route continues towards Saint-Sauveur, where the train reveals picturesque panoramas, before descending towards the Notre Dame des Roches viaduct. This site, both wild and peaceful, is an ideal haven of peace for meditation and contemplation. The view of the Notre Dame de la Roche de Mayres chapel, overlooking the railway, adds a spiritual and historical dimension to this timeless journey.

The rail bike, try the eco-friendly and family ride in Auvergne

The Vélorail d’Ambert offers a unique discovery experience, where nature and adventure meet on the old railway tracks. A rail bike is a light vehicle on rails, propelled by the pedaling of passengers. It’s an original and ecological way to explore magnificent landscapes while having fun. This activity is for everyone: families, groups of friends, couples, or even solo travelers. It is particularly appreciated for its fun aspect, its ease of access and its total immersion in nature.

The routes offered by the Vélorail d’Ambert are designed to offer varied experiences. The Discovery Route, lasting one hour round trip, is ideal for a first experience. Over a distance of approximately 8,8 km, this journey offers a charming overview of the Dore valley, allowing participants to try out the rail bike ride in the heart of preserved nature.

The Nature Route, lasting 1 hour 45 minutes round trip, is a little longer, covering approximately 14,6 km. It invites a deeper immersion in nature, running along the River Dore, offering changing views, sometimes wild, sometimes calming. This route is perfect for those looking to combine moderate physical effort and contemplation of nature.

The Tunnels Route, lasting 2 hours round trip, is the longest, extending over approximately 17 km. This route offers a complete experience, combining the beauty of rural landscapes with the excitement of going through tunnels. It is a friendly adventure that will delight participants of all ages, offering exceptional panoramas and moments of pure happiness.

With rail bikes that can accommodate 2 to 5 people, this activity is accessible to all and does not require any particular physical condition, as the elevation changes are very moderate. It’s a unique opportunity to enjoy the landscapes, while respecting the environment, while experiencing an unforgettable adventure on the rails.

Did you know?

The X 4200 panoramic railcar is a centerpiece of French railway history, reflecting an era when innovation and rail tourism were closely linked.

The history of railcars in France dates back to before the First World War, with vehicles initially based on road designs. These railcars offered a fast and economical alternative to trains hauled by steam locomotives, particularly on secondary lines.
In the 1930s, the Michelin company introduced the Michelins, fast railcars with special wheels fitted with hollow tires, the pneurail. Later, the term "Micheline" became a popular synonym for railcars in general.
The railcar is an autonomous train that uses a diesel engine to move.

The X 4200 is a two-level railcar, designed by Renault. Ten examples were built, numbered from X 4201 to 4210. Put into service between April and September 1959, these railcars were intended to serve tourist lines. They offered a panoramic view of the landscapes thanks to an elevated first class cabin, offering a 360° view. This innovative design allowed travelers to fully enjoy the landscapes they crossed.

The interior of the X 4200 panoramic railcar was carefully appointed, with a capacity of 88 seats, including 44 in first class under the upper dome. The layout and line of the railcar were designed by designer Paul Arzens, with a red and cream livery.
The X 4200, are preserved by the AGRIVAP association and continue to offer a unique tourist experience to railway enthusiasts.
