Tourbière de Baracuchet

Called narses, sagnes or marshes, peat bogs are wetlands that require several thousand years to form. The essential factor for their birth and survival is water. The fauna and flora are exceptional.

The Baracuchet peat bog is located in the Puy-de-Dôme department, in the Forez massif, in the commune of Saint-Anthème. This peat bog, which is mainly a high marsh, covers an area of 27 ha. It is managed by the Conservatory of Spaces and Landscapes of Auvergne, in partnership with the Livradois-Forez Regional Natural Park, within the framework of an agreement with the municipality of Saint-Anthème. This peat bog is part of the N2000 Monts du Forez site hosted by the Livradois-Forez Regional Natural Park.

This peat bog is home to rare and threatened natural environments (no less than 9 different natural habitats, 5 of which are recognized as being of European interest), several remarkable animal species, such as the Pearly Cranberry and the Damier de la Succise (butterflies), the Adder, and heritage plant species, including Andromeda, Slough Sedge, Cranberry, and Little-flowered Sedge.
True living memories of plant and animal species from the ice ages, the peat bogs present exceptional natural wealth and that of Baracuchet is no exception.
Redesigned in spring 2010 by the Conservatoire des Espaces et Paysages d'Auvergne, the different explanatory plaques will lead you to discover the specificities of peat bogs during a walking tour.
