La vallée du Fossat

Shaped by glaciers and men, this valley reveals a wealth of mountain and subalpine species that make it an emblematic site of Forez.

A beautiful legacy from the Ice Age.
This site is located on a large fault, trending northwest/southwest, remodeled during different glacial episodes. This valley of the upper Forez, cut into a granite massif, reveals, for the informed observer, a miniature inventory of all the forms resulting from the ice age: a clayey bottom supporting peat bogs, steep cliffs hidden under the forest, a cirque upstream, from the trough walls and erratic blocks to the rocks of the Pause...

The flora is characterized by the presence of carnivorous plants such as the large-flowered Grassette. It is of great botanical interest with 10 protected species and a great diversity of environments with, among others, sloped peat bogs and old fir forests that have not seen human intervention for 50 years.
