Eglise Sainte-Agathe

The beginning of the construction of the priory church dates from 979-985, the monastery is one of the oldest Cluniac monastic communities. The church has been listed as a historical monument since 1955.

The priory had more than 20 monks in the XNUMXth century, a rarity in Auvergne.
The prior of Ris was considered one of the most important lords of the diocese of Clermont. Gradually, the town will develop around the monastery on about 13 hectares.
The church tower will be destroyed during the Revolution.
It would seem that the real name of the church is Sainte-Croix but it appears in the Mérimée database under the name of Sainte-Agathe church.
