Musée départemental de la Céramique

Go back in time, share ancient secrets and admire the finesse of the creations of the time in a splendid and authentic setting!

It is a thousand-year-old history, between pleasure, culture and emotion that this museum delivers. Housed in a former pottery factory from the XNUMXth century, the museum presents hundreds of objects from the archaeological site of Lezoux and offers many activities.

Inside, just watch the children run from one desk to another to judge the very family-friendly nature of the visit program. Especially since the grown-ups are happy to get caught up in the game, trying to identify shards or carefully tracing sigillata decorations. But what is a sigillata ceramic? It is a fine ceramic intended for table service, characterized by a sandstone red glaze and decorations in relief, moulded, printed or added. Some pieces bear stamps, hence the modern name of sigillata, evoking a seal. If the best examples of sigillata are found here, it is because Lezoux was the main production center between the XNUMXst and XNUMXth centuries AD, exporting its tableware massively throughout the Roman Empire.

A museum accessible to all:
