Visit to the church of Saint-Pierre de Chaméane, attached in 1095 to the powerful abbey of La-Chaise-Dieu. The church, listed as a historic monument, benefited from a restoration campaign which highlighted the architectural quality of the building.
The name of Chaméane, “Casaméana” in the 10th century, is similar to that of “Casa dei”, “the house of God” which became La Chaise-Dieu. Indeed, if the church of Chaméane initially came under the abbey of Sauxillanges, daughter of Cluny, it was attached in 1 to La Chaise-Dieu, a powerful Benedictine abbey founded in 1095 by Robert de Turlande. The latter quickly set up a network of rural priories, sometimes fortified, as in Chaméane. The topography of the village center shows that an enclosure perhaps surrounded the priory, church and outbuildings. At the end of the Middle Ages the influence of the abbey of La Chaise Dieu declined and a secular seigneurial castle succeeded the monks' fortified house, in the center of an enclosure flanked by round towers.
