Volcan du Montpeloux

The Montpeloux is one of the rare examples of volcanic reliefs of the Monts du Forez which fascinates geologists, invites contemplation...and spectacle! In summer, ask for the cultural program (concert, dance, music, theatre, etc.)!

The Montpeloux is one of the rare examples of volcanic reliefs of the Monts du Forez, on the borders of the Auvergne Rhône-Alpes region. Long after having served as a promontory for a powerful fortified castle, the Montpeloux was gradually eaten away by the work of a basalt quarry, which today allows us to penetrate into the belly of the volcano.
Beautiful cliffs of basaltic prisms and life-size geological sections have been brought to light, which fascinate geologists, invite contemplation...and spectacle!

In summer, every Thursday evening (21 p.m.) an eclectic cultural program is on offer: dance, theatre, classical or rock music, not forgetting circus and comedy!
