Château d'Aulteribe

The Château d'Aulteribe has the reputation of being one of the best furnished residences in France. It preserves high quality objects and works of art and presents furniture stamped with the best Parisian workshops of the XNUMXth and XNUMXth centuries.

An exceptional collection of furniture and works of art invites you on a journey through the history of the arts, from the splendor of the living room to the intimacy of the bedrooms. It presents in particular a collection of stamped furniture from the best Parisian workshops of the XNUMXth and XNUMXth centuries, a portrait of Cardinal Richelieu by Philippe de Champaigne, tapestries from Flanders and Aubusson, porcelain...

The oldest mention of the site of Aulteribe dates back to the XNUMXth century. The Cholets were the first lords. In the second half of the XNUMXth century the castle was transmitted by marriage to the lords of La Fayette.
Charles Motier de La Fayette had the Place d'Aulteribe fortified by equipping it with arrow slits and gunboats as evidenced by the "prize" of the work carried out in 1467. The castle subsequently fell to the Monboissier family, before being acquired in 1775 by Pierre's family.

In the XNUMXth century, Joseph de Pierre and his wife Henriette Onslow undertook to restore and fit out the old residence.

In 1954 the Château d'Aulteribe and its outbuildings, park and forest, as well as its collections, were bequeathed to the State by the Marquis Henry de Pierre, with the stated wish that the whole be protected and used for artistic instruction. public. This wish, scrupulously respected, allows the visitor to discover this surprising place, located in the heart of the Livradois-Forez Regional Natural Park.

Since 1999, the Château d'Aulteribe has been hosting professional training in cabinetmaking. A unique cabinetmaking training in France!

The first higher technical patent for cabinetmaking crafts "restoration and creation" (BTMS cabinetmaking) was created in 1999, at the initiative of the Center des monuments nationaux, in partnership with the Auvergne Region, the Vocational Training Institute ( IFM), and the Chamber of Trades and Crafts of Haute-Loire as well as with the National Union of Crafts and Furnishing Trades (Unama).
The practice of marquetry cabinetmaking, restoration in the workshop, supervised by a master cabinetmaker and art history lessons take place at the castle where the history of furniture styles and techniques is facilitated by the discovery of its exceptional collections. During the second year, the students restore a piece of furniture of their choice with a view to its presentation to the public and produce a complete file on the work studied and restored.
